A brand identity is much more than a logo. Colours, typography, tone of voice, visual language — even the feeling a package leaves in your hand — all work together to create one consistent story in your customer’s mind. Here is what a decade of working with brands has taught us, in seven steps.

1. Strategy first, design second

Strong identities start with the right questions: Who are we talking to? Where do we differ from competitors? What is the brand promise? We run a competitive analysis, segment the audience and distil the positioning into a single sentence — the compass for every creative decision that follows.

2. Define the brand personality

If your brand were a person, how would it speak? Friendly, authoritative, playful? Choosing three to five personality traits makes everything easier, from the colour palette to word choice.

3. Design a memorable mark

A good logo stays legible on a tiny app icon and on a giant billboard. Simplicity, originality and scalability are our three core criteria. For Terrain Water, we captured that balance by reducing the waves of the North Sea coast to a single fluid line.

4. Systemise colour and typography

  • Primary and secondary colours: a palette with accessible contrast ratios on screen.
  • Typefaces: no more than two complementary families for headlines and body text.
  • Hierarchy: clear rules for size, weight and line height.

5. Establish a visual language

Photography style, illustration, icon sets and graphic devices are the brand’s handwriting. An Instagram post and a presentation slide using the same visual language should feel like the same brand — even without the logo.

Every great design begins with an even better story.

6. Test it across every touchpoint

Try the identity on the website, mobile app, packaging, business cards and social templates. A colour that looks perfect on paper can behave very differently on screen or on kraft packaging.

7. Protect it with brand guidelines

A brand book keeps the identity intact for years. Do’s and don’ts, clear-space rules and templates create a shared language between the agency, in-house teams and suppliers.
